Van Stiefel

Composer, Guitarist, Producer, and Author

Van Stiefel, born in 1965 in Atlanta, GA, has carved a distinct path in the world of guitar music, blending an array of musical languages and techniques, improvisation, electric guitar, and interactive technologies. Residing in Avondale, PA, as a composer, guitarist, producer, and author, he has brought to life over fifty works, each contributing to his unique voice in contemporary music. His early fascination with music was sparked by watching the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour at age three, leading his parents to gift him a ukulele to accompany the show.

At six, his father introduced him to the guitar, beginning a lifelong journey into music. His involvement with the Atlanta Boy Choir opened the door to classical music, enriching his early musical experiences with tours across England, Italy, and the United States. His formal education in music began with classical guitar at Maple Street Guitars in Atlanta, continuing at Yale College, where he was awarded the Cox Prize for Music Composition. He further honed his skills with a Masters in Guitar Performance from the Yale School of Music and a Certificate in Advanced Musical Studies from the Banff Centre as its Andre Segovia Memorial Fellow.

After obtaining his Ph.D. in music composition from Princeton University, Stiefel ventured into creating chamber music that incorporates the electric guitar alongside various instruments and computer-generated sounds. He formed the Sap Dream Quartet, marking his presence at the New York Guitar Festival and the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. His pioneering work in guitar music led to two albums being released on New Focus Recordings and additional recordings being made on Mode and Innova labels. His compositions have been performed globally and published by Da Vinci Publishing.

Van has seamlessly integrated music with technology, crafting interactive works for laptop ensembles and collaborating with the Princeton Laptop Orchestra (PLOrk). Despite his mastery of the guitar, his artistic curiosity extends to turntables, sound design, digital production, and spoken word, pushing the boundaries of musical experience.

His innovative contributions have earned support from several prestigious organizations, reflecting his significant impact on music. Beyond his professional achievements, he explores visual arts, inspired by his mother, a painter, to produce drawings and animations that offer a new dimension to experiencing music.

Looking ahead, Dr. Van Stiefel continues to evolve, recently launching a Substack to delve into guitar theory, music, music technology, and composition, promising a rich source of content and insights for his followers and furthering his creative explorations.
