About

Born in 1965 in Atlanta, Georgia, Van Stiefel has emerged as a significant figure in the guitar music scene. His innovative integration of diverse musical elements, including improvisation, electric guitar, and interactive technologies, has established him as a renowned composer, guitarist, producer, and author in Avondale, Pennsylvania. He has composed an impressive repertoire of over fifty works, thereby securing a unique position in modern musical composition.

Early Life and Education

At the tender age of three, he was captivated by the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, prompting his parents to gift him a ukulele to play along with the show. When he turned six, his father started teaching him the guitar, nurturing his burgeoning musical talent. His classical music journey began with singing in the Atlanta Boy Choir, leading to tours in England, Italy, and across the United States.

Van developed his classical guitar skills at Maple Street Guitars in Atlanta. His academic journey was marked by significant achievements, including winning the prestigious Cox Prize for Music Composition at Yale College. He also earned a Masters in Guitar Performance from the Yale School of Music and a Certificate in Advanced Musical Studies from the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada, where he was the Andre Segovia Memorial Fellow.

Career and Contributions

Having completed his Ph.D. in music composition at Princeton University, he ventured into creating chamber music that uniquely combines electric guitar with a variety of instruments and computer-generated sounds. He co-founded the Sap Dream Quartet, an experimental electric guitar ensemble. He showcased his talents at notable events like the New York Guitar Festival and the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. His discography includes albums released under New Focus Recordings and other works featured on the Mode and Innova labels. His groundbreaking compositions are celebrated by leading guitarists globally and are published by Da Vinci Publishing.

The seamless melding of music and technology distinguishes his work. As a self-educated computer programmer, he composed interactive pieces for laptop ensembles, incorporating electric guitars. His collaborations include the Princeton Laptop Orchestra (PLOrk) and presenting at the LSU Inaugural Symposium of Laptop Orchestras and Ensembles and TedX Phoenixville. Beyond the realm of guitar, he has delved into turntables, sound design, digital production, and spoken word, pushing the boundaries of conventional music-making. This exploratory approach, as described by critic Bob Duggan of BigThink, results in experiences that transcend "beyond space and time, deceiving in its simplicity."
